Spinster will be the 7th volume in my Lady Wynwood’s Spies series. I don’t yet have a release date because I’m still writing it and it’s taking a bit longer than I had anticipated, but within the next few months, I’m pretty sure.

This is the cover for Lissa and the Spy, a novella I’m writing that will be in Once Upon a Courtship, a multi-author box set releasing in October this year.

What’s up with Camy

I haven’t made as much progress on Lady Wynwood’s Spies, volume 7: Spinster as I would have liked because I had several things derail me in the past week. My IBS flared up on Saturday and Sunday, and then our power went out for most of the day on Monday.

Then on Tuesday my Camille Elliot website went down and I had to spend a couple hours chatting with my web hosting company to fix it. That was super stressful!!!

But I got to post a cute photo on social media about it:

I also discovered the next few chapters need to be outlined again because the pace is too slow, so I have been spending some time plotting rather than writing prose.

However, I have a long-ish snippet for you of my heroine Lena’s interaction with Mr. Clay (as you might recall from the last snippet I gave).

Lena braced herself for skepticism or disbelief, for she had often had occasion to suffer the sneers of her colleagues at the Ramparts. The other Mr. Clay was also especially antagonistic because Lena had once bested him in a sparring bout, bruising his pride. After that incident, Mr. Clay would find a way to denigrate Lena’s abilities or contributions whenever presented with an opportunity, but especially in front of their peers and superior officers.

That Mr. Clay had some slender ties to the aristocracy and was quick to put down those he considered inferior to himself. It was ironic because while he was quick to curry favor with the nobility, yet he treated Lena with such contempt, unaware of her true identity.

However, this Mr. Clay did not respond in the least like the one she knew in London. “I can believe that you are so skilled, Miss Penrose, for you were quite vigilant when I first arrived. I know other women who are able to defend themselves and others.”

It was both shocking and gratifying for someone to be so accepting of her abilities. Lena faltered in how to respond. “I know few women in the Ramparts,” she said.

“I was in the Foreign Office,” Mr. Clay said. “At the time, I knew no women like you.”

“I am acquainted with another Mr. Clay, and you are very different,” she blurted out.

This Mr. Clay suddenly grinned. “I know the Mr. Clay to whom you refer. I chose this name deliberately.”

“Whyever for?” Lena asked.

His grin deepened. “I hope that any mischief I cause here will reach the ears of that other Mr. Clay back in London.”

Lena liked him already.

“Have I met this Mr. Clay?” Dorothea asked.

“I do not believe so,” Lena said. “He is the one who …” She pointed to her nose.

“Oh! The one on whom you planted a magnificent facer!”

Lena was accustomed to Dorothea’s use of cant, which was a result of the influence of stableboys in her childhood before Mr. Neybridge, her uncle, adopted her. She usually did not revert to such language in the presence of strangers, but Mr. Clay did not seem the sort to object.

“Did you, now?” Mr. Clay smiled. “I believe we shall work splendidly with each other.”

Now here’s a little tidbit for you—can you guess who Mr. Clay really is???

Please continue to pray that I'll be able to keep my IBS under control and keep up with my writing! Except for Sunday, my IBS hasn’t been too bad. But the rain has been causing my allergies to attack and I’ve had mild sinus headaches. So please also pray for my allergies.
